Friendly Fire

US military personnel have to sometimes worry more when among friends than in combat. In the past decades hundreds of thousands of military personnel have been sexually assaulted in the US military.

A hundred thousand of those assaulted have been men. The latest pentagon report on military sexual assault estimates that about 35,800 service members experienced some type of sexual assault in the previous year.

Commanders often ignore reports and punish the victims instead. The army is worried that these reports would slow the already low number of recruitment even further.

In this episode we will explore the deploring reports of sexual assault and rape occurring routinely in the US military. Why are a great number of victims afraid to come forward. How the vast number of sexual assaults affect army recruitment, and what are the authorities and pentagon officials doing to address the issue.
