Moscow is purchasing military equipment from North Korea after Russian forces' arms shortage due to the conflict in Ukraine, according to an American official cited by US media.

The Hill reported on Tuesday that Moscow was suffering from “severe” military supply shortages prompting Kremlin to purchase arms from North Korea.

Russia's arms shortage, according to the report, is driven in part by export controls as well as economic sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies against Moscow over its special military operation in eastern Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the US and its allies have supplied billions of dollars worth of weapons to Kiev to fight the Russians whose military campaign in Donbas has stretched more than six months and shows no signs of ending.

Russia has warned the United States and its Western allies that sending weapons, ammunition and other military equipment to Ukraine will only increase damage and loss, as well as make the conflict last longer and postpone the end of the crisis.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in late June that Moscow had repeatedly warned the US and its European allies against pumping more weapons into Ukraine.

The expansionist approach and provocations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) toward Russia have been cited as one of the root causes of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The "denazification" of Ukraine and “defending people who for eight years are suffering persecution and genocide by the Kiev regime,” has been cited as a second reason why Moscow ordered the operation in Ukraine.
