The United States is trying to prolong the war in Ukraine to destabilize the region, according to an American political analyst.

Dan Kovalik, an author and political commentator in Pennsylvania, made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday while commenting on a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Putin on Tuesday accused the United States of attempting to prolong the conflict in Ukraine and seeking to destabilize the Asia-Pacific region, in a reference to the US interference in Taiwan.

"The situation in Ukraine shows that the US is trying to prolong this conflict. And they act in exactly the same way, fueling the potential for conflict in Asia, Africa, and Latin America," Putin said at the opening ceremony of the Moscow international security conference.

“Of course, the US is trying to prolong the war in Ukraine to destabilize the region. The US has been provoking this conflict for eight years in order to draw the Russians into a war which would undermine and potentially destroy Russia,” said Kovalik.

“This is exactly what Zbigniew Brzezinski admitted to doing in Afghanistan in the 1970’s and 80’s — drawing the USSR into a devastating conflict in Afghanistan.  And, this strategy worked quite well.  But now we see that the US has its sights set on further destabilization, wanting also to undermine the economies of its ‘allies,’ like Germany.  You see, the US has no friends; it only has interests,” he added.

“And it’s main interest is in being the sole superpower.  And so, even it’s own allies must be brought to heel to keep them from challenging this position.  Indeed, none other than Henry Kissinger warned of this, stating, ‘To be an enemy of the US is dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal,’” he said.

“It’s too bad that countries like Germany and Ukraine too, which is being sacrificed by the US to undermine Russia, never got the memo,” he concluded.
