EU delegation visits Gaza

Diplomats from the European Union including heads of European diplomatic missions in the occupied West Bank and al-Quds arrived in Gaza Tuesday morning.

The senior European officials toured the Shati refugee camp upon arriving in the blockaded territory. Their short visit comes less than two weeks after the Israeli regime launched a three-day military aggression on Gaza that claimed the lives of 49 people including 17 children.

The ambassadors of the European Union made an inspection tour of the wounded during the recent Israeli aggression at Gaza’s Shifa Hospital.

The brief visit by the European diplomats comes at a time when the people of Gaza are suffering under a tight Israeli blockade that has been in place since 2007. Most Gazans rely on handouts to survive and many of them are unemployed.

Palestinians and human rights groups have repeatedly slammed the European countries for their failure to take an action aimed at ending Israeli violations against the besieged territory.

Many here believe that the visit by the European diplomats will not improve the situation for the people of Gaza, given Israel’s impunity and the failure of the international community to hold the regime accountable for its crimes.
