JCPOA revival talks

Iran’s foreign ministry says there was some progress in the latest round of talks for the revival of the 2015 agreement, though Tehran’s demands are only partially fulfilled. Spokesman Nasser Kan’ani says the ground is prepared for a deal in the very near future if Iran’s redlines are toed and its interests are guaranteed. According to the spokesman, the US needs to be realistic for a deal to be cut. He says the removal of Iran’s sanctions will also benefit the global energy supply and by extension the European countries. The 2015 deal, known as the JCPOA, was thrown into chaos after the US unilaterally withdrew in 2018 and re-imposed sanctions on Iran. Indirect talks have been ongoing in Vienna since April last year for the re-admission of the US to the deal and its restoration.

Israel Syria strike

Palestinian Resistance movement Hamas condemns the latest deadly strikes by Israel against Syria. Hamas says the strikes come shortly after Israel’s other violations in the occupied territories and against the Gaza Strip. The movement says regional nations should stand up to the regime and end such crimes. This comes after the Israeli military hit areas near the Syrian capital Damascus and in Taturs, which lies on the Mediterranean coast. The attacks killed three people and injured three others. Syrian air defenses reportedly intercepted some of the incoming missiles over Tartus.

US delegation in Taiwan

The United States says a five-member congressional delegation is in Taiwan for a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen, amid heightened tensions with China over the island. The US embassy in Taipei says the meeting will focus on regional security, among other topics. The visit comes nearly two weeks after a controversial visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and is infuriated with the US meddling in the island’s politics. Beijing has conducted at least two military drills near the island since Pelosi’s visit. It has warned Washington that any interference in its internal affairs "will collide with a great wall of steel."
