Italy political crisis

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Draghi reacts during the debate on government crisis following his resignation the week before, at the Senate in Rome on July 20, 2022

Italian president Sergio Mattarella has dissolved parliament, clearing the way for snap elections expected to be held later this year. Mattarella did so following the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi earlier on Thursday.

Draghi stepped down after failing to revive his national unity government. Three coalition parties withdraw support for Italian Prime Minister’s government. Draghi has been prime minister of Italy since February 2021. He is expected to act as Italy’s caretaker prime minister until elections held and must deal with emergencies like Covid, Ukraine war and high inflation.

Press TV interviews Paolo Raffone, secretary general of CIPI Foundation from Brussels and Mahmoud Refaat, president of The European Institute for International Law and International Relations from Stockholm to look at political crisis and its future in Italy.
