Syria censures US-led smear campaign against Russia to maintain global hegemony

Smoke billows over the town of Vasylkiv just outside Kiev on February 27, 2022, after overnight Russian strikes hit an oil depot.

Syria has strongly condemned the smear campaign of Western countries, in particular the United States, against Russia, saying they are distorting facts, exacerbating the situation, and aggravating the crisis in order to maintain their hegemony over the world.

“The Syrian Arab Republic affirms that Russia has the full right to defend itself and counter imminent dangers to its people in the face of attempts by the West and the US to threaten its national security and undermine its stability,” Syria’s official news agency SANA cited an unnamed official source at the Syrian Foreign Ministry as saying on Sunday.

The source added that Western states and the US in particular, which have violated international law and massacred millions of innocent people through its wars, including the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, are in no position to lecture others about international law.

He called on the international community to stand up against Western and US policies, which constitute a serious threat to international peace and security.

Meanwhile, NATO has escalated its war of words against Russia since Thursday, when President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” aimed at “demilitarization” of the Donetsk and Lugansk Republics in eastern Ukraine.

The regions broke away from Ukraine in 2014 after refusing to recognize a Western-backed Ukrainian government that had overthrown a democratically-elected Russia-friendly administration.

More than 14,000 people have been killed so far across the regions as a result of the conflict that ensued between the Ukrainian military and the pro-Russian separatists.

Announcing the operation, Putin said the mission was aimed at “defending people who for eight years are suffering persecution and genocide by the Kiev regime.”

Attending a United Nations Security Council meeting on Ukraine, the Russian ambassador to the UN slammed the West’s disinformation campaign on the Ukraine conflict, saying Russia’s forces never attack civilians or civilian infrastructure during their operation.

Vasily Nebenzya said the real threat to Ukrainian civilians came from the Ukrainian forces, not from the Russian army.
