These caskets draped in Iranian flag contain the bodies of 150 Iranian soldiers whose remains have recently been found, more than three decades after the end of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran.

They are all called with the same name: Unidentified martyr.

The funeral procession was attended by Iranian military and state officials as well as thousands of Iranians to pay tribute to the martyrs and also to observe the second anniversary of the US's assassination of top Iranian military figure, Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani.

General Soleimani was the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.

He was assassinated in a US air raid outside Baghdad International airport on a direct order from Donald Trump.

Soleimani was highly revered in the region for his anti-terror activities and his role in eradicating Daesh terrorists from Iraq in 2017.

General Soleimani began his career as a soldier in the IRGC in the Iraq-Iran war; the longest armed conflict of the 20th century that killed an estimated 160,000 Iranians. More than 60,000 others went missing in the war.

The Islamic Republic has been carrying out constant search operations to recover the bodies of the missing over the years that have followed the war and holds special ceremonies like this to honor them.

The Islamic Republic always holds such mass ceremonies to honor its martyrs, and General Soleimani is no exception as the country also regards him as a martyr and a national hero.

On his second anniversary, Iranians have used any chance to pay homage to him. People here say this is to preserve what Soleimani stood for.
