Heavy snowfall, storms as Storm Barra hits northern Spain

Storm Barra brought heavy snowfall, showers and storms to northern Spain on Wednesday, with authorities urging drivers to be cautious as they return home after a long holiday weekend.

TV footage showed heavy snowfall in the Pyrenees mountains in the region of Aragon where road signs warned of avalanche risks.

The DGT traffic authority reported 13 roads had been cut off due to snowfall in Aragon, Navarre, Castille & Leon, Asturias and Cantabria.

In the coastal areas of Galicia, the Basque Country and Cantabria, huge waves crashed onto the shore leading some beaches to be closed.

Spain's weather agency AEMET said it didn't expect the weather to settle until the weekend.
