US President Joe Biden has criticized the House Republicans over their efforts to grill the members who voted for his infrastructure bill, describing the legislation as "the one thing we generated consensus on."

“The Republicans who voted in the House of Representatives for the infrastructure bill — you’ve seen in the press the reports that the other Republicans are trying to strip them of their standing in their Congress,” Biden said in a virtual town hall.

“If they’re a chairman of a committee, they’re trying to strip them of that chairmanship. I’ve never seen it like this before. It’s got to stop for the sake of America,” he added.

The comments by the Democratic president come after 13 Republicans voted in favor of the infrastructure bill on Friday, leading to the approval of bill in the House despite six negative votes by the Democrats.

The bill, which aims at modernizing and upgrading the US’ key infrastructure assets, was previously approved by the Senate in August after receiving some Republicans’ support.

The historical $1.2 trillion legislation includes massive investments to refresh American roads, railways, public transit, water systems, and power grids and will also focus on expanding broadband internet service. Only $550 billion of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Framework accounts for new spending.

Meanwhile, Biden is scheduled to visit the Port of Baltimore on Wednesday to highlight the benefits of the bill.

Port of Baltimore stands first in auto and farm machinery import and export in the United States, while employing more than 15 thousand people.
