In an unusual scene, an official Emirati delegation headed by Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan has met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.

The two sides discussed bilateral relations and cooperation, especially enhancing investment partnerships in various sectors.

Assad underlined the importance of the years-long close ties between the both countries. He described the Emirati stances as correct and objective, stressing that the UAE always stood beside Syrians.

Analysts say such comments are a clear welcome message for fully restoring relations with the UAE.

Foreign minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his country’s support for Syria’s stability asserting that events in Syria affected all Arab countries. He reiterated the UAE’s readiness to assist the Syrian people.

Experts say the visit is a brave step by the UAE and part of the Arab return to Syria.

The UAE was the first Arab country to reestablish diplomatic cooperation with Syria when it reopened its embassy back in 2018. It is the fourth country to send officials to Damascus during the crisis after Oman, Jordan and Lebanon, reflecting an Arab shift of attitude towards the Syrian government despite US and Western objections.

Analysts believe this visit happened only following consultations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, which has significant influence on Arab countries, and that the UAE is taking the lead as a mediator to bring back Syria to the Arab world mainly from an economic gateway.
