Afghans queue to receive aid amid acute food shortage
World Food Programme, the food-assistance arm of the United Nations, distributed vital relief supplies in Kabul over the weekend as crisis-stricken residents queued to receive wheat and other items.
"We poor people have come here. We don’t have anything to heat houses in the winter. Not enough food and water," one woman was quoted as saying.
Afghanistan is facing what UN agencies has described as "one of the world's worst humanitarian disasters".
Western countries have cut off their aid to the country since the Taliban laid siege to Kabul mid-August, pushing desperate people to the brink of starvation.
With winter knocking on the heels, the crisis is expected to worsen, believe experts.
