UK’s Johnson accused of ‘staggering hypocrisy’ for taking private jet from COP26
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been accused of ‘staggering hypocrisy,’ after he used a private jet to fly home from the COP26 climate change summit held in Glasgow.
“This is staggering hypocrisy from the prime minister," Labour chair Anneliese Dodds said on Thursday.
"After warning world leaders it's 'one minute to midnight' to prevent climate catastrophe, Boris Johnson clocked off from COP26, jumped in his private jet and flew down to London for dinner at a gentlemen's club with a self-confessed climate change skeptic.”
Johnson’s use of private jet, which contradicts the main thrusts of climate change actions to cut down the use of private vehicles, comes in the wake of his two-day presence in Glasgow where he posed as a moral leader, demanding other leaders show more backbone on tackling climate change.
Over his contradictory move, Johnson faced scathing headlines such as ‘shameless,’ ‘sleazy,’ and ‘guilty,’ which cast his government in the worst possible light on Thursday.
“It seems that when it comes to taking action to tackle the climate crisis, there's one rule for the Conservatives and another rule for the rest of the world,” Dodds said.
The development came after the Conservative Party was accused of ‘corruption’ earlier on Thursday, after backing a colleague who was found to have broken paid lobbying rules.
Conservative MPs rejected to vote on suspending Owen Paterson, who was alleged to have repeatedly lobbied on behalf of two companies paying him more than £100,000 per year.
The move sparked anger in the opposition party, forcing the government into a U-turn, which at last led to Paterson’s resignation on Thursday.
