Sudan military coup

The head of Sudan's ruling military council has dissolved the country’s transitional government, declaring a state of emergency. In a televised speech, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan vowed to form what he called a competent government, and pledged a transition to a civilian state. But Sudan’s information ministry said the announcement amounts to a military coup. According to the ministry, Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok has been detained and moved to an unknown location after refusing to support the coup. Meanwhile, the main opposition coalition called for civil disobedience and nationwide protests. The Forces of Freedom and Change alliance also have urged the transitional military council to step down, while demonstrators have taken to the streets to protest against the coup.

Protests against Sudan's coup

Protesters in the capital, Khartoum and the most populated city of Omdurman chanted slogans against military rule and burned tires. There have been reports of injuries in clashes between protesters and security forces. Sudan has been ruled by an interim government since the ouster of longtime president Omar al-Bashir in 2019. However, tensions have been running high between civilian and military leaders since a failed coup attempt in September.

COVID-19 surge in Russia

Russia has reported its largest single-day COVID-19 caseload since the start of the pandemic. Health authorities have reported around 38-thousand new infections, raising the total tally to over 8.2 million. They also registered one thousand and 69 new daily deaths, only six short of the record fatalities set on Saturday. Officials are blaming a slow vaccination campaign for the steep rise in infections and deaths. The surge has prompted authorities to introduce new curbs in most regions. This includes a mass work prohibition from October 28th to November 7th and a four-month stay-at-home order for unvaccinated senior citizens. Russia’s overall death toll is currently the highest in Europe.
