US must join with the world in condemning Israel’s genocidal oppression of Palestinian people: Analyst

The United States must end its support for Israel and join with the rest of the world in condemning the genocidal oppression of the Palestinian people by the Zionist regime in Tel Aviv, an American political commentator in Oregon has said.

Charles Dunaway made the remarks in an interview with Press TV on Friday after the United States said it would oppose what it called "disproportionate" attention by the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Israel.

This comes after the US has been elected to the UNHRC for the first time since the administration of former President Donald Trump quit the international body in 2018.

On Tuesday, the US Department of State announced Washington won a seat on the council for its next term, beginning in 2022.

“We will work hard to ensure the Council upholds its highest aspirations and better supports those fighting against injustice and tyranny around the world,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed in a statement.

The remarks came as some human rights defenders have criticized the US administration, saying that it has not done enough to hold Washington’s allies accountable for their human rights abuses.

On Thursday, State Department spokesman Ned Price said the US would “vigorously oppose” the council’s focus on Israel.

"We have concerns with the council. We will vigorously oppose the council's disproportionate attention on Israel, which includes the council's only standing agenda item targeting a single country," Price claimed.

The UNHRC has faced bipartisan criticism in the US Congress over its reports and statements on Israeli abuses against Palestinians.

‘US hypocrisy on human rights’

“The hypocrisy of the United States is exacerbated by its mercurial, highly partisan political system. In 2018, the US abandoned its seat on the UN Human Rights Council, now it wants to force the Council to abandon its role by ignoring the genocidal oppression of the Palestinian people by the Zionist regime in Tel Aviv,” Dunaway commented to Press TV.

“The Trump administration, for all its faults, was more honest about the true nature of US policy. By leaving the UNHRC and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018, they revealed the truth – the US does not care about human rights and does not honor its own treaty commitments. The new regime in Washington tries to disguise their disdain for human rights saying it wants to ‘... better support those fighting against injustice and tyranny around the world.’ Unfortunately, no one believes anything they say,” he observed.

“Israel is a standing agenda item because the Zionists have been engaged in a genocidal campaign against the indigenous people of Palestine for 100 years. The Palestinian people have been denied basic human rights since the formation of Israel. Focusing on this last settler-colonial state is entirely appropriate. If the US cared one whit about fighting injustice and tyranny, they would end their support for the Zionist regime and join with the rest of the world in condemning that apartheid state,” the analyst said.

“Someone should inform the US ruling class that they are no longer in a position to demand obedience from the world, or even to demand the world overlook their war crimes and serial violations of international law. Continuing to pretend they are the only indispensable and exceptional nation will only lead to their downfall. Continuing to listen to the Zionist lobby will only further diminish the respect for the US among other nations. A change of direction in Washington is desperately needed but is unlikely,” he stated.

“As Blinken and Biden continue to sputter about US ‘leadership’, the reckoning is coming, either by economic collapse or military defeat. Meanwhile, we have to endure their inept leaders and ridiculous rhetoric,” he concluded.
