DeVos tacitly denounces Trump’s grip over GOP ‘principles’
Former US Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has tacitly slammed her boss, former President Donald Trump, for his attack on what she described as GOP “principles.”
The controversial secretary, whose appointment at the education department by Trump led outcry from activists at the time, made the comments during a speech at the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference.
“Principles have been overtaken by personalities," said the Republican.
Her comments lay bare yet another aspect of infighting within the GOP amid Trump’s steadfast popularity among Republican voters, according to the latest polls.
"Politics now are so often about people, not the policies that impact lives directly," DeVos said.
The former education secretary further promoted freedom in the sector, describing it as a priority during her tenure in Trump’s Cabinet.
"Education is about students, not systems," she said, adding that education funding "should be tied to students, not systems and buildings."
The former president has been attacking top GOP figures, such as Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, as well as the ten House Republicans who voted to impeach him for inciting insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, when the supporters of the former president broke into the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden's victory.
There are serious concerns within the GOP leadership that Trump’s attitude could weaken the party in the 2022 midterm elections as well as the following 2024 presidential election, when the billionaire businessman is expected to run to challenge Biden in his possible reelection bid.
