South Koreans worried over record spike in COVID-19 cases

South Korea announced a daily record 2,434 cases of COVID-19 for the period ending Thursday at midnight, as the country struggles to rein in a fourth wave of the pandemic. The increase in cases - together with a vaccine supply shortage hampering immunization schedules - has generated public concern.

South Korea was somewhat slow to reserve vaccine supplies, with roughly 42 percent of the population now fully vaccinated. Several wealthy countries, such as the US and UK, have provided vaccines to all who wanted them, and are now offering booster shots.

South Korea in August earmarked two billion dollars to make the country a vaccine production hub, to in future secure enough vaccines domestically, and assist in creating an adequate global supply.

South Korean officials had eased gathering limits over Chuseok, the Thanksgiving Holiday, in order to provide relief from the stricter social distancing measures. Beginning Friday authorities here again tightened restrictions, hoping to bring the current 4th wave surge under control.
