Paris running out of patience with London on post-Brexit fishing rights, French minister says

French Secretary of State for European Affairs Clement Beaune says his country has lost patience with the UK over post-Brexit fishing rights, as diplomatic tensions between the two countries escalate.

“We are at the end of our patience. We are continuing our fight,” Beaune said at a French parliamentary hearing on Thursday, adding that Britain's position over the situation was “unsportsmanlike.”

French vessels want to keep fishing in the waters off the English Channel Islands. However, tensions simmered off the island of Jersey earlier in May, with the two sides sending navy and coastal patrol ships to the area.

Beaune's criticism came in the wake of the French government’s anger over the so- called AUKUS trilateral nuclear submarine deal between the UK, the US, and Australia, that tore up a separate French contract.

The deal effectively sidelined France, with Paris recalling its ambassadors to the US and Australia in an unprecedented display of outrage.
