US congressional hearing

US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has faced a grilling at Congress over the troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. Blinken was answering questions at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, where he faced strong criticism over the developments in Afghanistan. The top US diplomat defended President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw forces before the August 31st deadline. He, however, blamed the administration under former President Donald Trump for signing a deal with the Taliban. He noted that the Biden administration inherited a deadline for the pullout, and not a plan. Foreign troops scrambled to leave Afghanistan last month, putting an end to their 20-year-long war in the Central Asian country.

Iran Lebanon-bound fuel

The secretary general of the Lebanese Hezbollah resistance movement says the first shipment of Iranian fuel will reach Lebanon via Syria on Thursday. Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah stressed that the vessel safely arrived in Syria, despite concerns by some that Israel would not allow the fuel to reach Lebanon. He added that a second ship will arrive in Syria’s Baniyas port in the next few days followed by a third ship in the near future. Nasrallah had warned Israel and the US last month that from the moment the Iranian ship sails, Hezbollah will consider it Lebanese territory. The Iranian shipment will help ease fuel shortages in the Mediterranean nation which is also grappling with a deep financial crisis.

Burkina Faso violence

Militant attacks in Burkina Faso in recent months have claimed the lives of at least 480 civilians. That’s according to the Norwegian Refugee Council, a humanitarian non-governmental organization. In a statement, the council also expressed alarm at the rising number of displaced people in the West African nation, saying the violence has forced more than 275,000 people to flee since April. It added that about one and a half million people have been displaced in Burkina Faso due to the attacks since October 2020. The NGO warned that the people are struggling to choose between insecurity and hunger due to insufficient and slow humanitarian responses to the country. It added that the lack of food in surrounded areas is so critical that some civilians put their lives at stake in search for essentials.
