Greece and EU

In 2010 Greece became effectively insolvent. The European Union offered to help Greece avoid bankruptcy – but at a price. Financial support from the International Monetary Fund and, crucially, European creditors, required Greek budget reforms, specifically, spending cuts and higher tax revenues. These austerity measures created a desperate cycle of recession with unemployment reaching 25.4% in August 2012.
