Biden seeking to change dominant narrative on Afghanistan by making more public appearances
US President Joe Biden is seeking to change the current narrative on Afghanistan by making more public appearances to justify the country’s chaotic withdrawal which led to capturing of the whole Afghanistan by the Taliban.
So far, the Democratic president has made three speeches on different occasions and taken questions from reporters twice. The administration’s senior officials, including those of State Department and Pentagon, have also constantly appeared on leading news channels to offer more updates regarding the evacuation process and persuade the public opinion that the decision was in the US best interest.
Over the past two weeks, Biden has endured the harshest criticism over the way he has handled the withdrawal of the US troops from Afghanistan.
The US president, however, has signaled no change in his plan, reiterating that the US is on track to get all of its forces out of Afghanistan by Aug. 31.
"We are currently on a pace to finish by August the 31st. The sooner we can finish, the better," Biden said on Tuesday in prepared remarks.
"Each day of operations brings added risk to our troops. But the completion by Aug. 31 depends on the Taliban continuing to cooperate and allow access to the airport for those we're transporting out and no disruptions to our operations," he added.
The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in October 2001 as part of the so-called war on terror. While the invasion ended the Taliban’s rule in the country back then, it is ending with the return of the group to power.
