Two Azerbaijani vessels anchor in Iran’s Bandar Anzali port for Sea Cup military contests
Two military vessels of the Azerbaijan Navy have anchored in Iran’s northern port city of Bandar Anzali to participate in the “Sea Cup” contests, which will be held later this month as part of the International Army Games 2021.
A total of 66 members of Azerbaijani navy marine corps on G-122 and G-124 patrol ships arrived at the first and biggest port on the southern shores of the Caspian Sea on Wednesday morning and were received by the 4th Region or the Northern Fleet of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy.
On August 9, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Colonel General Zakir Hasanov visited his country’s naval forces to inspect the readiness of the team participating in the “Sea Cup” contests.
He reportedly inspected the supply and equipment of the crew, as well as the level of readiness of ships and military personnel representing Azerbaijan in the competition.
Two Kazakh vessels entered Iranian waters on Monday morning as the first vessels to participate in the Sea Cup contests.
The press service of Russia’s Southern Military District, in a statement on Friday, announced that the crews of Makhachkala and Astrakhan artillery ships of the Caspian Flotilla had left their base in the Republic of Dagestan and were sailing towards Bandar Anzali in northern Iran.
Makhachkala will be the main representative of the Russian navy in the competition while Astrakhan will be a reserve ship, it added.
Makhachkala sailors are expected to fire from artillery mounts at a floating mine, a target shield and an air target dropped by parachute, according to the statement.
They will also compete in the use of weapons, the fight for the survivability of the ship as well as search and rescue operations, and conduct exercises such as moving the vessel to the anchorage area, anchoring, sailing in specified routes at maximum speed and providing emergency assistance to ships.
The Sea Cup competition, which is a maritime training mission among the crews of surface ships, is scheduled to kick off on August 25 at the naval base of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the Caspian Sea, and will wrap up on September 4.
Indigenously-manufactured Sina-class fast attack missile boats Joshan (Armor) and Paykan (Arrow) will represent Iran in the contests.
