S. Korea's 4th wave continues, social restrictions extended

The South Korean government extended its highest level of social distancing for two more weeks as new cases of COVID-19 drag on at over 1500 per day, the most since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020.

The more contagious Delta variant of the virus is responsible for more than half of the new cases. Private gatherings of more than two people after 6 pm are banned and nightlife is largely shut down.

The South Korean government had just announced the relaxation of social distancing in early July when the 4th wave struck, forcing officials to reverse course. And pressure is mounting for relief. Churches have been critical of restrictions on the number of people that can attend services, and unions have held large street rallies challenging the guidelines.

Although most people observe government advisories, frustration is growing.

Officials say measures will be relaxed when case numbers fall. South Korea has so far vaccinated about 15 percent of the population, with the government now considering booster shots for the those most vulnerable.
