Tokyo protest

People in the Japanese capital have held a fresh protest to call for the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics amid a spike in the coronavirus cases. Some of the protesters accused Japanese officials of using the ongoing Olympic Games for political purposes. Similar protests were held in Tokyo over the past days. On Sunday, the city registered more than three thousand new covid-19 cases. A day earlier, infections there hit a record high of over 4,000. The authorities blame the surge on the highly transmissible Delta variant, denying any link with the Olympics. On Friday, the government extended a state of emergency in Tokyo and expanded it to neighboring prefectures.
