Pelosi calls McCarthy 'moron' over opposing mask mandate

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called House minority leader Kevin McCarthy a 'moron' over his opposition to wearing masks in the chamber.

The Capitol Hill’s physician Brian Monahan issued a new mandate for the House members, forcing them to wear face mask, even those who are vaccinated.

This came after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demanded the vaccinated US citizens to wear masks to stop the rising number of Covid-19 infections.

US daily coronavirus infections have risen again after numbers fell in May and June. The seven-day average of new Covid cases in the US was up 53 percent over the previous week.

"Make no mistake — The threat of bringing masks back is not a decision based on science, but a decision conjured up by liberal government officials who want to continue to live in a perpetual pandemic state," McCarthy tweeted on Tuesday night.

In response to McCarthy’s remarks, Pelosi said on Wednesday that all the lawmakers are obliged to obey the rules set by the Capitol physician.

"That's the purview of the Capitol Physician ... the mandate from him. I have nothing to say about that except we honor it," Pelosi told reporters.

Asked about the comments made by McCarthy, Pelosi replied "he's such a moron."

More than 34 million Americans have been infected with Covid-19 and over 615,000 deaths recorded so far in the US.
