Pelosi accused of satisfying political objectives via selection of Capitol riot committee

The top Democrat in the US House of Representatives has been accused of attempts to “satisfy her political objectives” through selection of a committee to investigate the protest by Trump supporters at Capitol on Jan. 6.

House speaker Nancy Pelosi was attacked by the Republican leader, Kevin McCarthy, in a statement on Sunday, asserting that Pelosi “has structured this select committee to satisfy her political objectives.”

“She had months to work with Republicans on a reasonable and fair approach to get answers on the events and security failures surrounding January 6,” said the California Republican. “Speaker Pelosi’s rejection of the Republican nominees to serve on the committee and self-appointment of members who share her pre-conceived narrative will not yield a serious investigation.”

He also suggested that the committee has no credibility in investigating what happened on the day supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an attempt to prevent lawmakers from certifying the victory of now-President Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

“Speaker Pelosi’s departure from this serious-minded approach has destroyed the select committee’s credibility. The U.S. Capitol and the men and women who protect it suffered a massive leadership failure. We must make sure that never happens again and that is what Republicans will be focused on,” he said.

Reps. Jim Jordan (Ohio) and Jim Banks (Ind.) were McCarty’s picks to sit on the committee but they were rejected by Pelosi.

Only two Republicans have been assigned to take part in the investigation out of the 10 members, both of whom staunch critics of Trump.
