The 96th Tehran derby saw the two soccer giants Persepolis and Esteghlal lock horns in the quarterfinals of Iran’s knockout competition, dubbed Hazfi Cup, at Tehran’s Azadi stadium.
While the derby got heated in the dying minutes, the two teams failed to score any goals in 90 minutes, and the goalless scoreline led to extra time and then to spot kicks.
The reds saved one penalty out of the five spot kicks, but missed two, to lose 3 to 4 to the blues.
The costly defeat sent Persepolis crashing out of the knockout cup and earned Esteghlal the ticket to the semifinals.
This was the 96th time the two most popular soccer teams in Iran have faced off. With the blues’ victory, Esteghlal have now won 27 times and lost 25 times against their red opponents. Fourty-four derbies have ended in a draw.
