Ukraine clashes

Tensions are escalating in pro-Russia eastern Ukraine where the Army says another soldier was killed and three were wounded in fresh clashes. The soldiers have not sustained life-threatening wounds. Ukrainian positions on the frontline have been targeted by artillery shells, mortars, grenade launchers and machine gun fire. Four Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in fighting over the past week. The renewed clashes in eastern Ukraine have left the ceasefire, brokered last year, in tatters. Pro-Russia groups in eastern Donetsk and Lugansk regions declared independence in 2014, shortly after Russia incorporated the Crimean Peninsula. According to the United Nations, the ensuing conflict has claimed more than 13,000 lives.

Catalonia COVID curbs

The number of COVID-19 infection cases and deaths in Europe keeps rising. The United Kingdom reported over 32,000 new cases and 34 fatalities in the past day. On Friday, Britain logged a record breaking 35,000 new cases amid a third wave of the pandemic. Elsewhere in Europe, Spain’s Catalonia region is experiencing a sharp rise in infections. Catalonia has re-imposed restrictions which also limit gatherings and night time activity. Regional officials are urging people to remain vigilant as large parts of the population are not vaccinated yet. Meanwhile, EU officials say the bloc has met its goal of providing COVID-19 vaccines for 70 percent of its adult population.

Somalia car bomb attack

In Somalia, at least 9 people have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack targeting a government convoy in the capital Mogadishu. The convoy was carrying Mogadishu’s police chief Farhan Qarole who survived the attack. Security officials say the casualties included police and civilians. Eight people were injured during the explosion that occurred at a busy intersection. The al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab terrorist group has claimed responsibility. Over a week ago, the group carried out an attack that killed ten people and injured dozens in Mogadishu. Al-Shabab, which is fighting to overthrow the internationally-recognized government, regularly stages attacks against government and civilian targets in and around Mogadishu.
