‘Slaughterhouse of human rights’: Iran slams US for blocking anti-Israel bids at UNSC

A senior Iranian human rights official has slammed the United States for “insolently” blocking three UN Security Council (UNSC) statements against Israel in a show of support for the regime’s genocide in the Gaza Strip, saying Washington has turned the Council into the “slaughterhouse of human rights.”

Secretary of the Iranian Judiciary’s High Council for Human Rights Ali Baqeri Kani made the remarks on Wednesday in an address to a virtual meeting of “The Youth Supporting Palestine” in the presence of human rights activists from different countries including, Italy, Syria, Pakistan, Bahrain, Palestine, Iraq and Yemen.

“Having supported the Zionist regime’s occupation, aggression, and criminality, the US regime is now doing all in its power to back the genocidal acts of the Zionist executioners in Gaza, and has insolently prevented the Security Council, for a third time, from issuing even a [mere] statement” against Israel, Baqeri Kani said.

He said the US and Israel have been working hand in hand to wipe out the Palestinian people and state.

“If the Zionist mercenaries have turned the big Gaza prison into the slaughterhouse of human existence through continued crimes and carnage, their American masters have turned the United Nations Security Council into the slaughterhouse of human rights through the intensification of hostilities toward human beings and humanity,” the official said.

He said the “criminal” blocking of three UNSC statement amounts “vetoing human rights” and making a mockery of human beings and their rights on the part of the “most impudent self-proclaimed advocate of human rights in the world.”

Washington on Monday wielded a veto, for the third time in less than a week, against a joint statement from the UN Security Council, which would call for an immediate ceasefire and cessation of Israeli attacks against Palestinians.

The joint statement had been introduced by Norway, Tunisia and China following an emergency session of the world body.

Over the past weeks, tensions have escalated in Jerusalem al-Quds amid acts of aggression by Israeli troops and settlers, and the planned expulsion of dozens of Palestinians from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in the occupied East al-Quds, where illegal Israeli settlers seek to take over the properties of Palestinian families.

The tensions spiraled into an armed conflict on May 10, when the resistance movement in Gaza came to the defense of their compatriots in occupied Jerusalem al-Quds by firing rockets in the Israeli-occupied territories.

The Israeli military launched a bloody military onslaught against Gaza, razing many homes and civilian buildings to the ground in the already-besieged Palestinian territory

The Israeli raids have killed 227 Palestinians, including 38 women and 64 children, and injuring 1,620 others.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Baqeri Kani slammed the international media’s deafening silence on the Israeli regime’s heavy military aggression against the defenseless Palestinian people and said, “The Zionists and their Western allies imagine that they can stifle the voice of the resistance [front] but now, the resistance is standing stronger than ever and the Zionists are weaker than before.”

The senior Iranian human rights official emphasized that the US and Europe are not qualified to play a mediatory role between the occupiers and the main owners of the Palestinian lands given their constant and diverse support for the Israeli regime in political, media and legal as well as logistical fields.

Baqeri Kani slammed some Arab states for betraying the Palestinian cause and normalizing relations with the Israeli regime, which he said “would definitely be detrimental to regional nations.”

He called on all student establishments in the Muslim world and the non-governmental organizations to pursue the Palestinian people’s rights as a universal demand through international bodies — including the UN, its Security Council and its Human Rights Council (OHCHR) — and through European human rights centers.
