Ship carrying corn to Iran grounded in Volga River: ILNA
A large dry bulk ship carrying corn to Iran’s northern port of Noshahr on the Caspian Sea has run aground in the Volga River, according to a report by Iran’s semi-official ILNA news agency.
The report published late on Monday said that the ship had been loaded at the port of Olya in Russia’s Astrakhan province and was sailing south toward Noshahr with a large cargo of corn.
It said the ship was just entering the Caspian Sea from the Volga River when it ran aground.
There were no more details in the report about the incident. However it said the ship did not belong to the Iranian fleet.
However, the official IRNA news agency said in a later report that local authorities in Astrakhan had identified the ship as Port Olya-4, a large Russian dry bulk vessel.
It said the grounding of the ship had caused a blockage in the shipping canal in Volga, adding that a refloating operation would start as soon as weather conditions improve.
The report said the no one on board the Russian ship had been injured.
Iran imports wheat and corn supplies from Russia to improve its stocks amid an uncertainty in global trade that has been caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The corn imported from Russia is mostly used as feed for Iranian poultry and livestock units.
Figures by Iranian customs office IRICA shows that the country spent nearly $1.1 billion on corn imports in the six months to late September last year.
