UK pledges to support Kiev in face of ‘destabilizing’ Russian actions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (L) meeting Boris Johnson (R) on October 08, 2020 in London

In a telephone call with Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has affirmed his government’s “unwavering support” for “Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity” in the face of alleged Russian military movements in the Crimea and on the Russia-Ukrainian border.

Johnson described the Russian military activity as “destabilizing” before adding that the UK has “significant concerns” over these movements on the Ukrainian border.

However, Johnson's accusations comes on the heels of the Kremlin's insistence that Moscow is “not threatening anyone”.

According to a statement by the UK PM’s office, Johnson also expressed “solidarity” with President Zelensky’s government against Russia and praised Ukraine’s approach to the low-level conflict.

By way of background, Ukraine and pro-Russian forces in the eastern Donbass region have been embroiled in conflict since 2014. However, an uneasy cease-fire has been in effect since July 2020.

While the longstanding conflict remains unresolved, the latest escalation was allegedly triggered after four Ukrainian soldiers died on March 26 in an incident that Kyiv blamed on pro- Moscow forces. Russia, on the other hand, denies any involvement in the conflict which essentially amounts to a Ukrainian Civil War.

It is worth notig that the UK's Integrated Review of Security, Defense, Development and Foreign Policy depicts Russia as an “active threat” to UK national security.
