Israeli forces shoot dead Palestinian man in West Bank over alleged car-ramming attempt

In this file picture, a Palestinian man's car is seen in the northern West Bank, where the Israeli military alleged the man attacked someone before being shot dead on February 5, 2021.

Israeli forces have shot dead a Palestinian man and injured his wife in the occupied West Bank over an alleged car-ramming attempt against the regime’s troops.

The Israeli military claimed in a statement on Tuesday its forces saw a vehicle stop at a temporary checkpoint they had set up the previous night in the town of Bir Nabala, located eight kilometers northeast of Jerusalem al-Quds.

The vehicle, it claimed, suddenly accelerated towards another group of soldiers, who then fired at the vehicle. No troops were injured in the purported incident.

The official Palestinian Wafa news agency reported that the fatal shooting took place at dawn as the Palestinian man, identified as 42-year-old Osama Sidqi Mansour, and his wife were traveling in their car.

The report, citing a statement released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, added that Mansour died “after sustaining head wounds from live fire near Bir Nabala ... and his wife suffered bullet wounds to her back.”

The woman was taken to Palestine Medical Complex in the central West Bank city of Ramallah, where her condition is reportedly stable.

Eyewitnesses told Wafa that Israeli forces fired a stun grenade at the car at 3:30 a.m. (0030 GMT).

They added that Israeli soldiers started firing shots as soon as the man pulled over the car for fear of their lives.

Meanwhile, the news agency said there had been clashes between Palestinian residents and the Israeli army in Bir Nabala on Monday evening.

Many Palestinians have sustained injuries or lost their lives in similar incidents due to allegations that they attempted stabbing or car-ramming attacks.

Israeli troops have on numerous occasions been caught on camera brutally killing Palestinians, with the videos going viral online and sparking international condemnation.

Tel Aviv has been criticized for its extensive use of lethal force against and extrajudicial killing of Palestinians who do not pose an immediate threat to the occupation forces or to the Israeli settlers.

In one of the latest such crimes, Israeli soldiers shot and injured a young Palestinian man in the town of Qatanna, located 12 kilometers northwest of Jerusalem al-Quds.

Wafa news agency reported that Yaqoub Mohammad Faqih, 20, was shot in the foot by Israeli soldiers.
