Facebook censors opinions that run counter to Western narrative: Analyst

Zafar Bangash speaks to Press TV in an interview about Facebook's censorship

A senior political commentator says many Western platforms like Facebook have become very restrictive and censor any opinion that runs counter to the Western narrative.

“Western media indulges in a lot of lies, and push the Western governments’ narratives,” Zafar Bangash, the director of the Institute of Contemporary Islamic Thought from Toronto, said in an interview with Press TV.

“Anybody that tries to project an alternative view – which is in fact based on truth – they become very queasy about it and shut them down,” he added.

His comments came a few days after Facebook informed Press TV, without any prior warning, that its account had been shut down for what it claimed to be the Iranian news channel’s failure to “follow our Community Standards.”

In mid-January, Facebook temporarily shut down Press TV’s page. The news outlet, however, had its page restored after appealing the platform’s decision to remove it.

In June 2020, Facebook labeled Iran’s Press TV, Russia’s Sputnik, and China’s Xinhua news agency as “state-media,” saying it would block them from running advertisements in the United States, which views the three countries as its arch-adversaries.

Press TV has repeatedly fallen victim to censorship not just on Facebook but on multiple fronts, including Twitter and Instagram besides Google and its services.
