Venezuela's Congress, also known as the National Assembly, has requested the government of President Nicolas Maduro to expel European Union Ambassador Isabel Brilhante from the South American country as a diplomatic action countering the recently-launched sanctions from the EU against the Bolivarian Republic.
The Maduro administration has denounced the European measures, describing them as illegal and harmful to the economy of Venezuela. Venezuelan officials say that the EU, along with the US government, is plotting to cause a humanitarian crisis in the Latin American country in order to bring down President Maduro.
Although a UN human rights envoy recently declared that foreign sanctions on Venezuela have no legal basis and must be lifted, the EU has ratified its decision. Venezuelan authorities claim they will legally confront the sanctions.
