Beijing accuses UK of ‘spreading false information' to 'discredit China'
China’s Foreign Ministry has accused the UK government of using the UN Human Rights Council to “spread false information”, following Britain’s expression of concern over Hong Kong’s national security law and alleged violation of the rights of its minority groups.
In a news conference held in Beijing on Wednesday (February 24), Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, targeted Britain’s so-called adoption of a resolution on this issue and told reporters that the UK’s move “is obviously an ulterior motive.”
He added that the purpose of this action is “to confuse and discredit China”.
Wenbin asserted that Beijing firmly opposes this and “the British tricks cannot deceive the international community.”
The Chinese spokesman also accused the UK of applying “double standards” and said that “British troops indiscriminately killed and tortured innocents in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places, but the perpetrators were sheltered by the British government and remained at large”.
Meanwhile, in a speech to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), the Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has warned the international community against “meddling" in the internal affairs of other countries in the name of human rights.
Yi hit back against UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab’s call for “urgent and unfettered access” to Xinjiang, denying any Uighur mistreatment, and reiterating that “there has never been so-called genocide, forced labor, or religious oppression in Xinjiang”.
Rebuffing the Foreign Secretary’s concerns, Yi said China welcomes any visit by the UNHRC to the region before adding that “the door to Xinjiang is always open”.
Despite all the tough rhetoric, the UK has not been able to influence Chinese policy and more embarrassingly the UK’s efforts has been construed as interference in Beijing’s internal politics.
