Dozens of migrants detained in UK after crossing English channel

The UK is continuing to use its hostile environment policy to encourage migrants to leave Britain, and discourage people fleeing war and prosecution from coming to the UK. Nonetheless hundreds have already made it to British shores this year, fleeing persecution and war.
Just over five weeks into 2021, and border forces have detained 49 migrants at Dover, taking the total number of arrivals this year to 285.
Meanwhile in France, officials managed to prevent 92 people from making the crossing. It’s a perilous journey, that so many seem determined to make.
