Joe Biden has officially entered the Oval Office, putting an end to the outgoing President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Joseph R. Biden was sworn on Wednesday morning as the 46th president of the United States against the backdrop of an unprecedented military lockdown and threats of violence which ultimately did not materialize.

Biden stressed “unity” above all else as he urged Americans to come together under his watch, in an inauguration speech that repeatedly rejected the politics of Donald Trump without ever mentioning him by name.

Biden used variations of the word “unity” 13 times in those remarks, delivered during a ceremony the public was discouraged from attending in light of both the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the January 6th storming of the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump.

Thousands of American flags were positioned across the National Mall in tribute to the 400,000 Americans who lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new president has outlined a series of executive orders he’ll sign this week, beginning with at least 15 today, including measures to undo Trump’s ban on travel from several Muslim-majority countries, eliminate funding for the construction of the Mexico border wall, and rejoin the Paris Climate Accord and the World Health Organization.

But only time will tell how successful the new president will be in putting his plans into action amid numerous challenges the US is grappling with.
