Capitol violence, Dems’ reactions serve as distraction from US woes

An American political analyst believes the violence in the Capitol and reactions to it by Democrats serve as a distraction from far more crucial matters in the United States.

John Steppling made the remarks in an interview with Press TV when asked about US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi who said members of Congress found to have been complicit in the storming of the Capitol should face prosecution.

Since the riots by US President Donald Trump’s loyalists at the Capitol on January 6, a number of Democrats have voiced suspicions that some Republicans might have helped the protesters logistically in the days leading up to the violence in which five people died.

Pelosi said on Friday the violence perpetrated must be scrutinized and lead to prosecutions of sitting lawmakers.

Steppling said Pelosi and other leading Democrats, who call the violence a deadly assault and even an insurrection, have seen real and bloody coup d’états the US has, in the past, fomented in different countries across “pretty much the entire planet” and did not disapprove of.

“I think the problem with the story in general is that the media as well as the politicians, people like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer, the leading Democrats, keep referring to the assault on the Capitol as a deadly assault, I’ve heard it referred to as an insurrection, it’s nothing of the sort.”

“I mean the United States has helped foment real coup d’états, bloody violent, sadistic coup d’états across Central America, the Middle East, pretty much the entire planet actually if we go back far enough and most recently of course in Bolivia, I mean it was a US-partially funded and orchestrated coup that got rid of (Bolivian president Evo) Morales, they tried to do it in Venezuela to remove (President Nicolas) Maduro and put in Juan Guaido, who nobody accepted, but Nancy Pelosi did, she congratulated Juan Guaido.”

“I mean the hypocrisy is astounding, the sort of lack any integrity that is just shameless,” Steppling added.

He went on to say that currently there are far more significant problems in the US which need to be addressed and "the whole thing" is serving just as a distraction from them.

So “the whole thing is serving as a distraction from much more crucial matters right now, the pandemic, or really the lockdowns, the government response to the pandemic, the fact that 60 million people are out of work.”
