Islam’s Prophet Muhammad and his household are highly respected by the Muslim world including Afghans.

However, five of them including the Prophet himself, his daughter Fatimah, his son-in-law and cousin Ali and his grandsons, Hassan and Hussein have a very special status in Islam. That is why Afghans do not hesitate to commemorate any event related to them in a show of respect.

Like the rest of Muslims around the world, Afghans also mark the martyrdom anniversary of Lady Fatimah, the revered daughter of Prophet Muhammad. One of the reasons for such love and respect to Lady Fatima is that she is known as the mother of 11 out of 12 Imams of Shia Muslims.

As Afghanistan is a religious nation, people here take such occasions seriously as part of the Islamic culture. They also say such mourning ceremonies allow Afghans to learn from great figures in the history of Islam including Lady Fatimah.

Afghans have their own traditions to mark the event. They hold mourning ceremonies, offer free food and drinks called Nazr and organize other programs like educational conferences about the personality and conduct of Lady Fatimah.
