At least 17 people were killed when the roof of a crematorium collapsed in northern India's Ghaziabad district, police said on Sunday, January 3.

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were called in to assist police and fire crews in the rescue and recovery operation. Seventeen of the 38 people pulled from the rubble had died. The remaining injured were moved to nearby hospitals, officials said.

The cause of the roof collapsed was still being investigated but local media, quoting officials, said a heavy downpour during the day could be responsible.
