Float-in cinema helps Manila moviegoers with social distancing

Sitting in gondolas, moviegoers in the Philippine capital are enjoying films while keeping safe amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Venice Grand Canal set up a screen in an outdoor "canal" of the upscale mall earlier in December and started showing films for those who miss the big screen as theatres have been closed since mid-March to stop the spread of the virus.

The gondolas hold two people and are steered into place by gondoliers in traditional costumes before the movies start. Umbrellas are provided in case of light showers.

There are only two screenings per day and most of the films romantic dramas to match the mood of the outdoor cinema. A maximum 10 people are allowed per screening and the tickets that cost P500 (10USD) are sold online and most of the weekend "float-in" shows are sold out.

For additional safety, guests use their own earphones to listen to the movie audio by tuning into a specific radio frequency which is available for those aboard the gondolas.

As of Saturday, December 19, the Philippines has recorded over 450,000 coronavirus cases with a total of over 8,000 deaths.
