Car plows into pedestrians in German city, killing 5
A man has driven his car though a pedestrian zone in the German city of Trier, killing five people and injuring 15 others.
The man, reportedly middle-aged and drunk, drove his car into a crowd of people in the historic center of the city on Tuesday.
A nine-month-old baby was among the dead.
Police arrested the driver at the scene. They said the act was deliberate but no terrorist motive was suspected.
Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said the driver had gone “on a rampage.”
“It’s a horror scene,” Leibe said. “Many people are traumatized. I think this is Trier’s darkest day since World War II.”
Eyewitnesses at the scene said that they saw a stroller flying through the air as the car ran at high speed through the zone.
The car sped zig-zag across the shopping area, leaving a trail of carnage in its wake for about a kilometer before it was stopped, after apparently being rammed by a police vehicle near the city’s old Roman gate.
Four year ago, a truck plowed into a popular Christmas market packed with tourists as well as local shoppers in the German city of Berlin. Twelve people were killed and some 50 others injured in that incident. The terrorist group of Daesh claimed responsibility for that incident.
