Tensions mount as the final ballots are counted in one of the most hotly contested elections in history. Fears of unrest are growing as President Donald Trump does everything he can to hold on to office. This report takes a closer look at the latest developments from the US election.

Global audiences remain focused on the US as democratic candidate Joe Biden is on the cusp of becoming the next US President. Arizona is the latest state to swing in favor of the former Vice President. The State’s 11 electoral college votes mean Biden needs just 6 more votes to reach the goal of 270.

Before the results were announced, hundreds of Trump supporters, some armed, descended on Arizona’s Maricopa counting Office, calling on staff to stop processing postal votes. Police were called and three people were taken away.

Similar scenes were reported in the four states still counting ballots after Donald trump and the republican party filed a string of lawsuits to force states to halt any more counting.

While Biden called for patience, international observers also chimed in, condemning the President in a bid to maintain the legitimacy of the election.

The US elections have been tarnished by legal uncertainty and unprecedented attempts to undermine public trust… baseless allegations of systematic deficiencies by the incumbent President harm public trust in democratic institutions. The vote itself was competitive and well managed despite the challenges presented by Covid-19.

Allies Britain and France have also made statements hoping to maintain the elections legitimacy and ease growing tensions.

While the counting is set to end in the coming days, this election is far from over. As Legal challenges mount, gun sales are going through the roof. With key battlegrounds yet to declare their results... tensions are at fever pitch and the feeling is one of uncertainty. As authorities brace themselves for unrest, global audiences continue to look on.
