Palestinian journalists in the blockaded Gaza Strip have marked the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists in front of the United Nations office.

Journalists demanded an end to Israel’s impunity and that Israeli leaders be held accountable for their crimes against Palestinian journalists. The Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate handed a memorandum to UN officials demanding protection for Palestinian journalists.

Since the beginning of 2019 Israeli forces carried out hundreds of attacks against Palestinian journalists. According to human rights organizations Israeli forces killed 43 journalists over the last twenty years.

Additionally hundreds of journalists were seriously injured, sustaining permanent disabilities that will probably accompany them throughout their lives. During the Great March of Return rallies Israeli forces shot and killed two Palestinian journalists and injured hundreds while they were covering the peaceful action.

Palestinian journalists say they work hard to avoid being part of the story themselves. Experts say Israeli forces will continue with their violations against journalists as long as the international community keeps turning a blind eye. Israeli attacks against journalists have increased in recent years. Palestinian Journalists risk their lives on a daily basis to cover the news and expose the brutality of Israel.
