Afghan’s ex-PM says US defeated in Afghanistan

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar is the second senior Afghan political figure to have visited Pakistan after the recent trip by Dr Abdullah Abdullah, the head of Afghan high peace council.
The leader of Hizb-e-Islami and former Mujahideen commander’s visit is part of ongoing efforts to seek an end to the 19 year old war in Afghanistan. Hekmatyar held talks with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan and also met other officials. He thanked Pakistan for helping the Afghan peace process.
Speaking at a think tank, Hekmatyar, however, said the United States has been defeated in Afghanistan. Hekmatyar said the US is meeting the same fate as the former Soviet Union troops faced many decades ago.
Hekmatyar, who fought against the former Soviet Union troops and then against the US-led international coalition, says the US is left with no other option but to seek a political solution to the Afghan war. He also made it clear that people of Afghanistan will never accept the US presence any more.
His statement comes at a time when talks between the Afghan government and Taliban are underway in Doha to evolve a consensus on the future of Afghanistan. But experts do not rule out the possibility of Afghanistan slipping into a civil war if there is no peace accord.
Despite several rounds of talks, the Afghan government and Taliban negotiators have yet to agree on the agenda and rules of engagements, something observers believe highlights the bumpy road ahead in the way of Afghan peace.
