Iran has hosted an event to honor war veterans and pay homage to the victims of the 1980-1988 Iraqi imposed war on the country.

In his address to the ceremony, Commander of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Brigadier General Hussein Salami said the Iraqi imposed war was, in fact, a war between Iran and the West.

The Iraq-Iran war began less than a year after the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which toppled the US-backed Pahlavi regime.

Iraq was fully supported, both militarily and psychologically, by the US and its allies, which denied Iran’s access to foreign defense equipment.

The IRGC commander noted that America's war against Iran is far from over, as Washington continues waging it to target different areas of the Islamic Republic.

The event came on the last day of the national sacred defense week, which marks the beginning of the Iraq-Iran war. “Iran is Stronger” was the motto of this year’s weeklong occasion. This refers to the advances Iran has made in the defense sector despite crippling US sanctions.

The Islamic Republic says it is now producing over 80 percent of arms indigenously to defend the country's security and integrity.

The Iraq-Iran war was the longest war of the twentieth century, yet military commanders here say it marked the dawn of Iran's self-sufficiency in the defense sector, since the war taught Iranians that they cannot achieve security as long as they remain dependent on foreign arms.
