Bloomberg pays fines for 32,000 felons in Florida so they can vote in US election

Former New York Mayor and presidential candidate Michael Bloomberg joins other guests as they arrive for a remembrance ceremony on the 19th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks at the National September 11 Memorial September 11, 2020 in New York City.

US billionaire Michael Bloomberg has reportedly paid fines for 32,000 felons in the US state of Florida so they can vote in 2020 presidential election.

"The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy and no American should be denied that right," a Bloomberg spokesperson told Axios. "Working together with the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, we are determined to end disenfranchisement and the discrimination that has always driven it."

Florida voters can vote only if they pay all fines, fees and restitution — sometimes totaling more than $1,000 — owed to the government.

The former presidential candidate, who has supported Democratic nominee Joe Biden, reportedly raised $16.1 million to help Florida felons regain voting rights.
Bloomberg's fundraising came on top of the additional $5 million from the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition.

The payback initiative was meant for voters who were already registered to vote, Black or Latino, and had fines and fees of less than $1500.

The former mayor of New York City is spending at least $100 million to support Biden in Florida by injecting funds in the key electoral college state.

“Mike Bloomberg is committed to helping defeat Trump, and that is going to happen in the battleground states,” said Bloomberg adviser Kevin Sheekey earlier this month, adding that the spending “will mean Democrats and the Biden campaign can invest even more heavily in other key states like Pennsylvania, which will be critical to a Biden victory.”
