Boris Johnson imposes new partial lockdown to prevent Covid-19 second wave
Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has imposed new coronavirus-related restrictions to contain what is gearing up to be a second wave of infections.
Speaking at a Downing Street news conference, the PM claimed coronavirus rules have become “complicated and confusing” and said the latest measures are aimed at “simplifying and strengthening the rules” to make them “easier for everyone to understand”.
The central feature of the new restrictions revolves around the “rule of six”, which restrict gatherings to a maximum of six people, enforced with dispersals, fines and potentially even arrests.
The PM also set out a so-called “moonshot” plan to control and contain new coronavirus infections with mass testing.
The government’s intention is to increase testing capacity to an ambitious 500,000 tests a day by the end of October.
Other measures include legally obligating pubs and restaurants to request contact details of everyone visiting and holding the information for 21 days to pass it onto the National Health Service’s Test and Trace system as and when required.
Furthermore, travelers returning to the UK will be required to fill out passenger locator forms to enforce quarantine rules, with Border Force actively involved in enforcement operations.
The new measures will come into force from Monday (September 14).
The PM’s latest intervention in the pandemic comes as the UK reports another 2,659 coronavirus infections, the fourth day running of over 2,000 reported cases.
On current trajectory, the UK is expected to be hit hard by a second wave of infections in the autumn and winter.
