The Gaza Strip is still under a tight lockdown as more coronavirus cases are being discovered within the general population.

The ministry of health in Gaza has reported 83 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday morning.

Currently there are hundreds of active coronavirus cases within the community. Authorities in Gaza started the lockdown following the detection of four COVID-19 cases outside quarantine facilities.

Many Gazans live on modest daily wages earned at shops, markets, restaurants and cafes, all of which are closed.

Amid the current state of emergency, the movement of people and vehicles all over the Gaza Strip is prohibited except in extreme situations.

According to the World Health Organization Gaza's hospitals currently have capacity for 350 coronavirus patients for a population of around two million. Health officials are deeply concerned over the disastrous combination of poverty, densely populated areas and limited medical supplies.

The community transmission constitutes a potentially disastrous development for all sectors in Gaza. Experts warn that should the coronavirus pandemic take root in the Gaza Strip, the consequences would be catastrophic.

The Impoverished seaside sliver has been under a crippling Israeli blockade since 2007.
