Birmingham City Police struggles with ‘illegal’ street parties
Illegal street parties and gatherings continue to proliferate across Britain with Birmingham, the UK’s second largest city, ranking as one of the hardest hit places.
According to Birmingham City Police, 70 unlicensed social gatherings – including house and street parties – were disrupted on Saturday night alone.
The spike in “illegal” gatherings comes on the heels of Britain’s second city getting added to a government watch list following a rise in coronavirus infections.
Birmingham City Police – which is part of the larger West Midlands Police force – has been at pains to urge the public to avoid illegal parties and gatherings.
The force has even taken to social media to remind the public that “we are still in a pandemic”.
West Midlands Police’s calls on Twitter for people to comply with coronavirus-related guidelines come in the wake of the third successive weekend of similar violations across Birmingham.
Only a week ago, Birmingham city police officers disrupted a rave involving more than 300 people in the city center during a night in which 80 similar gatherings were detected and disrupted.
In order to deter large street parties and gatherings – where the risk of Covid-19 infection is high – the government announced on Friday (August 21) that police forces across England have been invested with the power to fine organizers of gatherings involving more than 30 people to the tune of £10,000.
